Oncaspar

Generic Name: pegaspargase (Intramuscular route, Intravenous route)

peg-AS-par-jase

Commonly used brand name(s)

In the U.S.

  • Oncaspar

Available Dosage Forms:

  • Solution

Therapeutic Class: Antineoplastic Agent

Pharmacologic Class: Asparaginase (class)

Uses For Oncaspar

Pegaspargase belongs to the general group of medicines known as antineoplastics. It is used with other cancer medicines as a first-line treatment to a certain type of blood cancer called acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This medicine also treats ALL in patients who have had serious allergic reactions to L-asparaginase .

Pegaspargase seems to interfere with the growth of cancer cells, which are eventually destroyed. Since the growth of normal body cells also may be affected by pegaspargase, other effects also occur. Some of these effects may be serious and must be reported to your doctor.

Before you begin treatment with pegaspargase, you and your doctor should talk about the good this medicine will do as well as the risks of using it.

Pegaspargase is to be administered only by or under the immediate supervision of your doctor.

This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription .

Before Using Oncaspar

In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this medicine, the following should be considered:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatric

Infants up to 1 year of age—Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Children 1 year of age and older—This medicine has been studied in children 1 year of age and older and has not been shown to cause different side effects or problems than it does in adults. In fact, the side effects of this medicine seem to be less severe in children than in adults.

Geriatric

There is no specific information comparing the use of pegaspargase in the elderly with use in other age groups. Safety and efficacy of pegaspargase in the elderly have not been established.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy CategoryExplanation
All TrimestersCAnimal studies have shown an adverse effect and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women OR no animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women.

Breast Feeding

There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.

Interactions with Medicines

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are receiving this medicine, it is especially important that your healthcare professional know if you are taking any of the medicines listed below. The following interactions have been selected on the basis of their potential significance and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is not recommended. Your doctor may decide not to treat you with this medication or change some of the other medicines you take.

  • Rotavirus Vaccine, Live

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines.

  • Adenovirus Vaccine Type 4, Live

  • Adenovirus Vaccine Type 7, Live

  • Bacillus of Calmette and Guerin Vaccine, Live

  • Influenza Virus Vaccine, Live

  • Measles Virus Vaccine, Live

  • Mumps Virus Vaccine, Live

  • Rotavirus Vaccine, Live

  • Rubella Virus Vaccine, Live

  • Smallpox Vaccine

  • Typhoid Vaccine

  • Varicella Virus Vaccine

  • Yellow Fever Vaccine

Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol

Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Other Medical Problems

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

  • Anticoagulant therapy (treatment with blood thinners) or

  • Bleeding problems—The chance of bleeding may be increased

  • Blood clots

  • Chickenpox (including recent exposure) or

  • Herpes zoster (shingles)—Risk of severe disease affecting other parts of the body

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus—The chance of side effects may be increased

  • Infection—Pegaspargase can decrease your body's ability to fight infection

  • Liver disease—Effects of pegaspargase may be increased because of slower removal of this medicine from the body

  • Pancreatitis—The chance of side effects may be increased

Proper Use of Oncaspar

Pegaspargase sometimes is given together with certain other medicines. If you are using a combination of medicines, it is important that you receive each one at the proper time. If you are taking some of these medicines by mouth, ask your doctor to help you plan a way to take them at the right times .

While you are receiving pegaspargase, your doctor may want you to drink extra fluids so that you will pass more urine. This will help prevent kidney problems and keep your kidneys working well.

This medicine often causes nausea and vomiting. However, it is very important that you continue to receive the medicine, even if you begin to feel ill. Ask your health care professional for ways to lessen these effects, especially if they are severe.

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

Precautions While Using Oncaspar

It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits to make sure that this medicine is working properly and to check for unwanted effects.

While you are being treated with pegaspargase, and after you stop treatment with it, do not have any immunizations (vaccinations) without your doctor's approval. Pegaspargase may lower your body's resistance and there is a chance you might get the infection the immunization is meant to prevent. In addition, other persons living in your household should not take oral poliovirus vaccine, since there is a chance they could pass the poliovirus on to you. Also, avoid persons who have taken oral poliovirus vaccine. Do not get close to them, and do not stay in the same room with them for long. If you cannot take these precautions, you should consider wearing a protective face mask that covers the nose and the mouth.

Pegaspargase can temporarily lower the number of white blood cells in your blood, increasing the chance of getting infection. It can also lower the number of platelets, which are necessary for proper blood clotting. If this occurs, there are certain precautions you can take, especially when your blood count is low, to reduce the risk of infection or bleeding:

  • If you can, avoid people with infection. Check with your doctor immediately if you think you are getting an infection or if you get a fever or chills, cough or hoarseness, lower back or side pain, or have painful or difficult urination.

  • Check with your doctor immediately if you notice any unusual bleeding or bruising; black tarry stools; blood in urine or stools; or pinpoint red spots on your skin.

  • Be careful when using a regular toothbrush, dental floss, or toothpick. Your medical doctor, dentist, or nurse may recommend other ways to clean your teeth and gums. Check with your medical doctor before having any dental work done.

  • Do not touch your eyes or the inside of your nose unless you have just washed your hands and have not touched anything else in the meantime.

  • Be careful not to cut yourself when you are using sharp objects such as safety razor or fingernail or toenail cutters.

  • Avoid contact sports or other situations where bruising or injury can occur.

If pegaspargase accidentally seeps out of the vein into which it is injected, it may damage some tissue and cause scarring. Tell the doctor or nurse right away if you notice redness, pain, or swelling at the place of injection.

This medicine may cause serious allergic reaction. Tell your doctor immediately if you start having trouble breathing, chest tightness, skin rash, or itching while you are receiving this medicine .

Some people who have received this medicine developed pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Check with your doctor if you experience sudden and severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, or chills while on this medicine .

Check with your doctor immediately if you start having increased thirst or hunger, increased urination, pale skin, nausea, sweating, or faintness. This may be signs that you are having problems with the amount of blood sugar in your body .

This medicine may increase your risk of developing serious blood clots. Tell your doctor right away if you develop any sudden and severe headache, arm or leg swelling, shortness of breath, or chest pain .

Ovcon 35

Pronunciation: nor-eth-IN-drone/ETH-in-il ess-tra-DYE-ole
Generic Name: Norethindrone/Ethinyl Estradiol
Brand Name: Examples include Loestrin 1/20 and Ovcon 35

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious heart and blood vessel side effects from birth control pill use. This risk increases with age and with heavy smoking (15 or more cigarettes per day) and is quite significant in women older than 35 years of age. Women who use birth control pills are strongly advised not to smoke.

Ovcon 35 is used for:

Prevention of pregnancy. It may also be used to regulate the menstrual cycle. It does NOT protect against HIV infection (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Ovcon 35 is a combination of 2 female sex hormones, estrogen and progestin. Ovcon 35 works by preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs. When there is no egg to be fertilized, pregnancy cannot occur. It also thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.

Do NOT use Ovcon 35 if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Ovcon 35

  • you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant

  • you have or have ever had abnormal growth or cancer of the breast, cervical or uterine cancer, or unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • you have or have ever had stoppage or rupture of blood vessels in the brain (stroke); blockage of blood vessels (blood clots) in the legs, lungs, heart (heart attack or angina/chest pain), or other parts of the body; heart valve problems; or severe high blood pressure

  • you have liver disease, liver tumors, or yellowing of the eyes or skin during pregnancy or during previous use of Ovcon 35 or a similar medicine

  • you are taking acitretin, aprepitant, barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), bosentan, carbamazepine, felbamate, griseofulvin, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), modafinil, nevirapine, penicillins (eg, amoxicillin), protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir), rifamycins (eg, rifampin), St. John's wort, tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline), topiramate, or troglitazone

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Ovcon 35:

Some medical conditions may interact with Ovcon 35. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are breast-feeding

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances

  • if you smoke cigarettes or are 35 years of age or older

  • if you have breast nodules, disease of the breast, an abnormal breast x-ray or mammogram, or a strong family history of breast cancer

  • if you have vision problems, depression, diabetes, epilepsy (seizures), gallbladder or liver disease, heart problems, high blood pressure, kidney disease, or migraine headaches

  • if you have high cholesterol, triglycerides, or calcium in the blood; pancreas disease; obesity; or uterine fibroids or endometriosis

  • if you are going to have surgery or you will be on bed rest

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Ovcon 35. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Acitretin, aprepitant, azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), bosentan, carbamazepine, felbamate, griseofulvin, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), modafinil, nevirapine, penicillins (eg, amoxicillin), protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir), rifamycins (eg, rifampin), St. John's wort, tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline), topiramate, or troglitazone because they may decrease Ovcon 35's effectiveness. While on these medicines, you will need an alternative form of birth control (eg, condoms) until your next period after stopping these medicines.

  • Beta-blockers (eg, metoprolol), cyclosporine, theophyllines, or troleandomycin because the risk of their side effects or toxicity may be increased by Ovcon 35

  • Corticosteroids (eg, prednisone) because their side effects, including rounding of the face, weight gain, fluid retention, elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, or skin changes, may be increased by Ovcon 35

  • Oral anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because their side effects, including risk of bleeding, may be increased by Ovcon 35; however, it is also possible that the effectiveness may also be decreased by Ovcon 35

  • Lamotrigine because its effectiveness may be decreased by Ovcon 35; stopping Ovcon 35 may lead to severe side effects

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Ovcon 35 may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Ovcon 35:

Use Ovcon 35 as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • An extra patient leaflet is available with Ovcon 35. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.

  • Take Ovcon 35 by mouth with food.

  • If you have trouble remembering to take Ovcon 35, talk to your doctor about how to make pill-taking easier or about using another method of birth control.

  • Always have another kind of birth control (eg, condoms) to use as a backup in case you miss pills. Also, always keep an extra, full pack of pills.

  • Decide what time of day you want to take your medicine. It is important that you take it at about the same time every day.

  • Do not skip pills even if you are spotting or bleeding between monthly periods or feel sick to your stomach (nausea).

  • Do not skip pills even if you do not have sex very often.

  • If you miss a dose of Ovcon 35, take it as soon as your remember. Take your next dose at the regular time. This means you may take 2 doses on the same day. If you miss more than 1 dose of Ovcon 35, refer to the patient information that came with Ovcon 35 or contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Ovcon 35.

Important safety information:

  • Ovcon 35 may increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots, high blood pressure, or similar problems. The risk may be greater if you smoke.

  • There may be times when you may not have regular menstrual periods after you have taken a pack of Ovcon 35 for a cycle. If you have taken Ovcon 35 regularly and missed 1 period, keep taking Ovcon 35 for the next cycle but be sure to tell your doctor first.

  • If you have not taken Ovcon 35 daily as instructed and missed a period, or if you missed 2 consecutive periods, you may be pregnant. You could get pregnant if you have sex in the 7 days after you miss pills. Do not continue to take Ovcon 35 until you are sure that you are not pregnant, but continue to use another method of birth control (eg, condoms).

  • Contact your doctor if you miss any menstrual periods so that the cause may be determined.

  • Follow your doctor's instructions to examine your breasts, and report any lumps to your doctor immediately.

  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Ovcon 35 before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

  • If you will be confined to a chair or bed for a long period of time (eg, a long plane flight), notify your doctor 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Special precautions may be needed.

  • Ovcon 35 does not stop the spread of HIV or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to others through blood or sexual contact. Use barrier methods of birth control (eg, condoms) if you have an HIV infection or an STD. Do not share needles, injection supplies, or items like toothbrushes or razors.

  • Taking certain antibiotics or anticonvulsants while you are using Ovcon 35 may decrease the effectiveness of Ovcon 35. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control (eg, condoms) until your next menstrual period.

  • If you wear contact lenses and you develop problems with them, contact your doctor.

  • Ovcon 35 may cause dark skin patches on your face. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Ovcon 35. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.

  • Diabetes patients - Ovcon 35 may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.

  • Ovcon 35 may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Ovcon 35.

  • Lab tests, including PAP tests, may be performed while you use Ovcon 35. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

  • Ovcon 35 should not be used in CHILDREN or before the patient's first menstrual period; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Ovcon 35 if you are pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away. Ovcon 35 is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Ovcon 35.

Blocadren

Generic Name: timolol (TIH mo lol)

Brand Names: Blocadren

What is Blocadren (timolol)?

Timolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins).

Timolol is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).

Timolol may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about Blocadren (timolol)?

Do not stop taking timolol without first talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse.

If you need to have any type of surgery, you may need to temporarily stop using timolol. Be sure the surgeon knows ahead of time that you are using timolol.

Timolol can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol, which could increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking timolol.

Timolol is only part of a complete program of treatment for hypertension that may also include diet, exercise, and weight control. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely if you are being treated for hypertension.

Hypertension often has no symptoms, so you may not even feel that you have high blood pressure. Continue using this medicine as directed, even if you feel well. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Blocadren (timolol)?

Before taking timolol, tell your doctor if you have:

  • asthma, bronchitis, emphysema;

  • diabetes;

  • low blood pressure;

  • a heart problem such as heart block, sick sinus syndrome, slow heart rate, or congestive heart failure;

  • depression;

  • liver or kidney disease;

  • a thyroid disorder;

  • myasthenia gravis;

  • pheochromocytoma; or

  • problems with circulation (such as Raynaud's syndrome).

If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use timolol, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Timolol can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How should I take Blocadren (timolol)?

Take timolol exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts or for longer than recommended by your doctor.

Take this medication with a full glass of water.

Take timolol at the same time every day.

Do not skip doses or stop taking timolol without first talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse.

To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your blood pressure will need to be checked on a regular basis. It is important that you not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon that you are using timolol. You may need to briefly stop using timolol before having surgery.

Store timolol at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
